Whale Shark Swim Questions, Ningaloo
Whale sharks return to Ningaloo Reef year after year, and the season generally runs from around March or April into July or August, though the exact opening week shifts from year to year. This page answers the questions that come up before booking: what a swim costs, how no-sighting terms work, where tours depart from, and which manta, humpback and reef snorkel trips share the roster. Every price, rating and duration below is taken from the tour listings themselves.
Booking Basics
When is whale shark season at Ningaloo Reef?
The whale shark season at Ningaloo roughly spans March or April through July or August each year, with whale sharks drawn in close to the reef after the March to April coral spawning triggers plankton blooms, per the Western Australian parks authority. Trips depart from both Exmouth and Coral Bay through that window. Check each listing for its operating days. Outside those months, operators shift to humpback, manta and reef snorkel tours, several of which appear on this roster.
What happens if no whale sharks appear?
No operator can promise a whale shark on any given day, so no tour listed here carries a sighting guarantee: each operator sets its own refund or rebooking terms, which you can read on the live booking page before booking.
Which towns do the tours depart from?
Both Exmouth and Coral Bay serve as departure bases on the roster. Exmouth sits at the northern end of the reef and hosts the Ningaloo Blue swim plus the snorkel trips run by Exmouth Adventure Co. and Cape Immersion Tours. Coral Bay, further south, is home port for Coral Bay Ecotours and the Ningaloo Reef Dive manta tours, while Ocean Eco Adventures runs a luxury manta cruise with Exmouth pickup, but the boat itself leaves from Coral Bay (see Swim Vs Dive).
Costs And Inclusions
How much is a whale shark swim?
The three whale shark swims here run from $700 to $745 per person. Ningaloo Marine Interactions starts at $700, Ningaloo Blue at $705, and the Coral Bay Ecotours Whale Shark Safari at $745, with that last one adding a DPaW park fee on top. Across the rest of the roster, published from-prices range from $139 for a sunset whale watching cruise to $745 for the full-day Humpback Whale Safari.
Is gear and food provided?
Most listings bundle snorkel gear, a wetsuit, lunch and boat transfers, and several also list a spotter plane to help locate wildlife, but the exact mix varies by operator, so check the inclusions on each listing. One extra to plan for: the Whale Shark Safari lists a DPaW park fee of $20 per adult and $10 per child, payable before departure rather than included in the from-price.
What is the cancellation policy?
Thirteen of the 14 tours list free cancellation, the exception being the Ningaloo Blue whale shark swim, and cutoff points differ from trip to trip so check each live booking page and confirm the season window before committing to a date (see Whale Shark Packing List). Weather is the practical exception: operators will not take boats out in unsafe conditions, and when an operator cancels for weather, rebooking or refund is handled under their own terms on the live booking page. Booking early in the season is wise for peak months, since whale shark boats carry limited swimmer numbers.
More Ningaloo Tours
Can you swim with mantas and humpbacks too?
Yes, seven of the 14 tours here are manta or humpback trips. Manta swims depart Coral Bay with Ningaloo Reef Dive and Coral Bay Ecotours, and Exmouth via Ocean Eco Adventures, with from-prices between $220 and $600. On the humpback side, the Humpback Whale Safari starts at $745 and the sunset whale watching cruise at $139, and humpback trips generally run later in the year than whale shark season.
What reef snorkel trips are listed?
Four in total. The roster includes a guided Ningaloo Reef snorkel adventure from $250 with Exmouth Adventure Co., a six hour snorkel and wildlife trip from $275 with Cape Immersion Tours, a shorter turtle and snorkel tour from $145, and a full-day Ningaloo safari from $320 that adds a Yardie Creek cruise. Because these do not depend on whale shark dates, they suit visits outside the main season too.
